Santa Fe has been home to Deborah Garcia her entire life. She attended St. Anne’s Catholic School, Larragoite Elementary, Carlos Gilbert Elementary and Santa Fe High School. She graduated from the College of Santa Fe, earning a BA in Education. She began her teaching career at St. Michael’s High School as a college senior, instructing English 7 during the summer school session. She became a full time teacher after graduating and has been serving St. Michael’s for 33 years. “I was thrilled and a bit frightened when Jim Ball asked if I would like to teach a summer school course at that time. Saying yes to Jim and later, accepting Br. Emmet Sinitiere’s invitation to join the St. Michael’s family, has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

Since that day, Ms. Garcia has had the pleasure of teaching English 7, 8, & 9, Math, Life Science, Health, NM History, US History, JH Speech, JH Drama, Study Skills, JH Art, Art I, Manual Arts, Theology 7 & 8, Service Learning, and Music Ministry Class. She has coached JH Basketball, JV Basketball, JV Softball, Varsity Track and was the first girls Varsity Soccer coach, as she was responsible for starting the program.  She sponsored The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 7th and 8th grade class, and has been the director of the St. Michael’s Music Ministry Choir for 10 years. She was a recipient of the Brother Botulph Award and Teacher of the Year in 1992.

In her spare time, Ms. Garcia very much enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and gardening. She especially loves playing her guitar, bass, and mandolin. She has been involved with parish choirs since the age of 14 and has a genuine love for praise through music. Her greatest experience was traveling to the Basilica de Guadalupe, in Mexico City with El Coro de La Conquistadora, from St. Anne’s Parish. The group was chosen by the Archdiocese to play and sing mass there, in thanksgiving for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Mexico, in 1979!  She is also a true animal lover and her daily walk to the park with her dogs is a perfect end to each day!  Ms. Garcia was blessed with a strong mother and sweet grand-mother,  who passed on to her, their gifts of music and song, love of children and animals, and her desire to give to others through service. “My mom and my grandma had a very positive impact on me and I truly believe both are looking down upon me and smiling.”
