Featured Teachers: Joe Mier

Get to know some of our teachers through the Proust Questionnaire, liberally adapted from French writer Marcel Proust (1871–1922).


Joe Mier has taught at St. Mike's for four years and has been a teacher in Santa Fe for 35 years. He teaches Chemistry, Pre AP Chemistry, and Physical Science.                                         

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a pilot and fly all over the world!

What are your favorite animal?
Horses and dolphins.

What is your favorite color?
Blue, due to being color blind it is one of the few colors that I can see really well.

What is your most marked characteristic?
Good natured; I’m a happy person most of the time!

What do you think are your greatest faults?
I tend to be impatient, especially with myself.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Spending as much time as I can outdoors, exploring the great outdoors on horseback and golfing!

Who are your favorite writers or poets?
Louis L’Amour and Robert Frost.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Batman, he has the best toys!

Who are your favorite characters in history?
Albert Einstein, no one else comes close!

Who are your heroes in real life?
My mom and dad, they survived some very difficult times and raised a strong family.

What quality do you most admire in people?
Honesty and kindness.

Where would you most like to travel?
Germany and Switzerland. I’ve been to Spain and Italy.

If you had not become a teacher, what would you have like to have done instead?
I would enjoy doing biomedical research.

What do you most value in friends?
Good humor and fun-loving!

What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes?
To be disabled and not be able to take care of myself.

What is your favorite word?
Flabbergasted!

What is your greatest pet peeve?
People that have no regard for others and that treat friends better then they treat family members that have loved and helped them.

What natural gift would you most like to possess?
Musical and artistic talent.

What is your motto?
Don’t worry, be happy!

What is your present state of mind?
Peaceful.
