Blue Stampede features dinner, a raffle, a business showcase, live music by St. Mike's students, and an action-packed live auction! Proceeds from the Blue Stampede benefit tuition assistance for St. Michael's students.
What's the twist to Blue Stampede?
The theme is blue.
That's right: blue cheese dressing on your salad, blue corn enchiladas for dinner--served on tables covered with, you guessed it, blue tableclothes--and the music will be Blues. We want you to dress in blue, put on your blue suede shoes, dye your hair blue, and bust out the blue lipstick--because there will be a prize for the best-dressed person in blue!
And did we mention? The grand prize in the raffle is $10,000.
A single raffle ticket admits two people for dinner. Tickets are $125, available in the main office and the Development Office. There are only 400 tickets available and they are already selling like (blue corn) hotcakes! Buy yours by March 1 at 4 p.m.
Come on out to support tuition assistance, build community, and have a great time!

Patty Sahd's son is a graduate of St. Mike's, and Ray Aranda graduated from SMHS before taking over the family plumbing business. Both articles take us back to a simpler time in Santa Fe, and remind us who built our community and why it continues to thrive today.

Thanksgiving Greetings from the Principal
Nov 17, 2011
Dear St. Michael’s Family:
The holiday season is just around the corner. Along with all the hustle and bustle that Thanksgiving and Christmas bring is an occasion to reflect and give thanks for our blessings. Among St. Michael’s High School’s blessings is our rich, 152-year history. Our foundation and our traditions guide us each day as we make decisions that affect our school community.
Another blessing is the loving, supportive parents who do everything in their power to assist their sons and daughters in achieving the highest level of academic excellence. The support of our parents helps make St. Mike’s an extremely rewarding place to teach and lead. St. Mike’s is also blessed to have dedicated, motivated teachers who posses such a wealth of knowledge. They are generous with their time and they truly care about the academic and personal welfare of each student.
By far our greatest blessing is our dynamic and diverse student body. St. Mike’s students are hard-working, fun-loving, and talented. They brighten our hallways with their energy and creativity, and embody our hopes and dreams for the future.
In closing, I ask that you take time in the coming weeks to cherish your blessings and remember those less fortunate. Have a wonderful and safe holiday season.
Live Jesus in our Hearts…
Thank you,
Sam Govea

The “Mexican Indians” of Santa Fe—Old Friends and Allies or a Case of Mistaken Identity?
Elizabeth Oster, Ph.D.
An intriguing and persistent tradition attributes some of the earliest settlement in Santa Fe’s Barrio de Analco to Christian Indians who accompanied the Spanish to Santa Fe. These Native American colonists are thought to have been Tlaxcaltecans, representatives of a powerful Nahuatl-speaking people who allied with the Spanish to bring about the downfall of the Mexica empire, and who assisted them with other military and political endeavors as the Conquest was carried north. Although historical data that would allow for the movements of indigenous settlers from Mexico to Santa Fe are tantalizingly scant, current research points to other plausible ethnic groups as sources for non-local Native Americans who populated the new colony. The true account of the “Mexican Indians” who came to Santa Fe may be more complicated than any have suspected.Elizabeth Oster is co-principal investigator, with Alysia Abbott, for the San Miguel Archaeological Project. Oster has worked for more than 24 years in archaeology, historic preservation and cultural resources management, including 13 years with the National Park Service and almost seven years with New Mexico’s Historic Preservation Division. Oster has conducted archaeological fieldwork in New Mexico, Arizona, Louisiana, and Mexico and holds a master’s and Ph.D. from Tulane University. Oster has written a wide variety of technical reports and professional publications, and has presented professional papers in English and Spanish in the U.S., Mexico, and Spain. Currently, she assists communities, agencies, and non-profit organizations with cultural resources management, planning and fieldwork in her role as principal investigator for Jemez Mountains Research Center, LLC.

The 17th Century Barrio de Analco: Its Roots in Colonial Mexico
William Wroth, Ph.D.
The Barrio de Analco, established in Santa Fe in the early seventeenth century, is representative of a pattern of settlement found throughout Mexico in the colonial period. The name Analco, meaning in Nahuatl “the other side of the river,” was often applied to settlements of subject Indians founded next to Spanish towns and cities. This talk will place Santa Fe’s Barrio de Analco in a larger cultural and historical context and will deal with the possible origins of the first settlers of the barrio, as well as its transformation into a Genízaro community.Cultural historian William Wroth specializes in the Hispanic and Native American cultures of the Southwest and Mexico. His publications include Hispanic Crafts of the Southwest (1977), Christian Images in Hispanic New Mexico (1982), Images of Penance, Images of Mercy (1991) and Ute Indian Arts and Culture from Prehistory to the New Millennium (2000). He has served as curator of the Taylor Museum of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and as guest curator for exhibitions at the Museum of International Folk Art and the American Craft Museum, among other institutions. Wroth was co-curator, with Robin Farwell Gavin, of the exhibition “Converging Streams: Art of the Hispanic and Native American Southwest,” at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art in Santa Fe, and co-editor of the book of the same title. He also contributed to All Trails Lead to Santa Fe, the official commemorative publications of the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Santa Fe.

Spanish-Indian Alliances and the Archaeology of the Pueblo Revolt
Matt Liebman, Ph.D.
Over the past 15 years, archaeology has provided a wealth of new insights into the Pueblo Revolt era in New Mexico (1680–1700). This talk attempts to answer the question: “Why did some Pueblo tribes resist colonization at all costs, while others became some of the Spaniards' closest allies?” The answers are found not only in the documents the Spaniards wrote, but also in the pottery, arrowheads and villages that the Pueblo people who lived during this tumultuous era left behind.Matthew Liebmann is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University. He earned his Ph.D. in 2006 from the University of Pennsylvania, and has been collaborating on archaeological research with the Pueblo of Jemez for 11 years. From 2003–2005 he worked as Tribal Archaeologist for the Jemez Department of Resource Protection. He has published research in American Anthropologist, The Journal of Field Archaeology, and Kiva: The Journal of Southwestern Anthropology and History. He is co-editor, with Uzma Rizvi, of Archaeology and the Postcolonial Critique (Altamira Press, 2008) and, with Melissa Murphy, Enduring Conquests: Rethinking the Archaeology of Resistance to Spanish Colonialism in the Americas (School of Advanced Research Press, 2011).
Lectures are open to the public and are held at San Miguel Chapel on Old Santa Fe Trail. Admission is a $5 suggested donation to support the ongoing preservation work of San Miguel Chapel. For more information about the Secrets of San Miguel Lecture Series, call (505) 988-1944.

In 2010, St. Michael’s High School decided to assign summer reading to all students, instead of limiting summer reading to pre-AP and AP students only. We wanted to find books of high literary merit that would engage students and keep them entertained. Though it’s traditionally accepted that books that have survived for more than 25 years are considered classic literature, the modern and refreshing Harry Potter series, with the first installment published 12 years ago, is quickly becoming accepted as part of the young adult literary canon. Many students have already read the series, and quite a few students are excited about reading it for school. Some graduating seniors have even expressed disappointment that they did not get to read the books for school credit. Teachers from other departments have shown enthusiasm as well, and have heard from their students how excited they are about this.
Teaching the Harry Potter series was discussed at the Advanced Placement conference held in Albuquerque over the summer that was attended by several SMHS English teachers. The novels follow the traditional and timeless Hero’s Journey theme—with the call to adventure, the trials the hero must face, and the return home. In class discussion, we focus on how literary characters help our students learn about themselves—their strengths and weaknesses, their goals, their sense of right and wrong, and their sense of society and their responsibility to it. Harry is a selfless character who looks out for the well being of others without regard for his own needs or the need for power. His nemesis, Voldemort, is the classic literary villain—in search of eternal life and absolute power and control. Another theme addressed in the books is prejudice and how to overcome it; two examples of this are the Muggles—wizards born to non-wizard families—and house-elves, who are treated as slaves.
In Vertical Teaming—the pedagogical strategy we use in our English classes—students study the same literary piece throughout their school career, deepening their analysis at each advancing grade level. J.K. Rowling helps with this process because she has grown with her readers. The earlier books are simpler and the later books in the series are more complex. By the end of their school careers, our students will become “experts” in this literary work as they grow with Harry and his friends, and this skill in literary analysis prepares them for college level English courses. The Harry Potter books are not the main thrust of the school year’s reading assignments. Most summer reading projects are completed within the first month of school. The seventh grade is the only exception because they will read two of the books in order to complete the entire series before high school graduation. Please note, we will not be watching the movies in school. We know that students cannot be expected to read all the books leading up to their assigned reading, so we allow them to read the on-line summaries in order to catch up to their assignment.
St. Mike’s has never shied away from controversial books. Many of our favorite books that have stood the test of time have been banned at one time or another, including The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Bless Me, Ultima, and Fahrenheit 451. With the guidance of their teachers, students learn how to approach literature in an educated, informed way and understand the fantasy world Rowling creates for Harry Potter. In the tradition of fantasy books, the Harry Potter series is comparable to The Hobbit, The Odyssey, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, as well as many other books that we read at St. Mike’s. Another benefit to the series is that the ages of the heroes coincides with the ages of our readers, which is a great way to keep students engaged in the reading. The series lends itself to many literary themes and elements, including character development, archetype, imagery, symbolism, allusion, mythology and suspense. The primary theme is good vs. evil, and in these books, good does triumph over evil. As the books progress the language becomes more complex, which helps us improve our students’ vocabulary. Rowling also has a sense of “clean” language: the characters rarely if ever use foul language.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops lists five of the Harry Potter movies on its website and rates them all A-II: suitable for adults and adolescents. The magic in the movies, say the reviewers, “should be viewed as time-honored storytelling devices, like those employed throughout the history of Western fantasy literature, from childhood fairytales … to Arthurian legends and Shakespeare.” The review of Deathly Hallows Part 2, notes that “the epic struggle brings Harry’s innate courage to the fore but also tests his willingness to sacrifice himself on behalf of others.” For more in-depth reading of the reviews by the USCCB, click here.
If parents have questions about the Harry Potter series they should contact their student’s teacher or Janis Chitwood, English Department Chair.

Summer Update from St. Mike's
Jul 21, 2011 | 0 comments | Leave a comment
As is done every summer at St. Mike’s, the school has been turned inside-out and thoroughly cleaned. The school has ordered 250 new classroom desks to replace many of our old desks.
A new summertime math enrichment program for junior high students was launched in June to address the growing problem of poor performance for SMHS pre-high school math students. Thirty-two students completed the three-week enrichment course, which was designed to introduce the students to algebraic topics essential to Algebra I success, including real numbers, equations, percentages, geometry and polynomials.
Principal Govea was on a much deserved vacation for most of June; in July he and Ms. Chitwood attended the Lasallian Leadership Institute (LLI) in Minneapolis. LLI is a three-year training program for administration, faculty and staff that integrates and promotes Lasallian heritage in the personal and professional lives of leaders as future catalysts of the Lasallian Mission. President Sullivan also attended a Lasallian training program; in June she spent two weeks at the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California. The Buttimer program provides participants with a deepr understanding and appreciation of the Lsallian charism through in-depth study of John Baptist de La Salle’s personal journey and the Lasallian spirituality and pedagogy.

Tournament fundraiser helps memorialize former St. Michael's athlete Patterson

'True.'
To those who knew Ryan Patterson best, that was the nickname bestowed upon him.
He was true to friends, true to his family, true in the delivery of his thoughts and emotions.
True was buried last December after taking his own life in his Albuquerque apartment three days before Christmas. He was only 24 years old.
For those who knew him exclusively as an athlete, Patterson was something to behold. A three-sport standout earlier this decade at St. Michael's High School, he served prominent roles on the Horsemen football and baseball teams that won state championships his final year.

Greetings from the Chair of the Board of Trustees
Jun 01, 2011
Dear St. Michael's Community,
As I drove by St. Michael’s near the end of May and watched students leave the building for the last time this school year, it struck me that now was a time to write a letter celebrating the success of this school year and looking ahead to the next one.
The 2010–11 school year was one of challenge and change, achievement and success. Our new president, principal, and assistant principals are surely relieved that the year has come to an end. And they must be tired, because they worked very hard. But they should also have a sense of satisfaction, because they took the reins of a school with over 150 years of tradition, embraced that which characterizes St. Michael’s, and began making the adjustments necessary for the school to thrive in the 21st century. I am pleased to announce that the leadership team of President Marcia Sullivan, Principal Sam Govea, and assistant principals Robin Chavez and Ron Geyer will return next year. There is much to look forward to and for which to be grateful. A million thanks from the Board of Trustees to everyone at St. Michael’s for their contributions this year:

Message from the President of Parents' Club
Apr 14, 2011
Parents’ Club is vitally important to the St. Mike’s community—and every parent or guardian of a St. Mike’s student is automatically a member. Unfortunately, participation from members has been low. Thankfully, parents who have given their time to Parents’ Club have been completely dedicated—this small group of parents has been dynamic because though there have been only a handful of regular working members involved for the past two school years, this year alone, Parents’ Club was able to provide approximately $84,000 to school programs and causes. All of the money Parents’ Club raises goes back into the school community.
I am proud to report that in 2010–2011 Parents’ Club and its committees provided or are in the process of providing the following funds:
Beautification Committee
$525 to Choir
$150 to Football
$5,500 to the Impact Class
$1,024 to Cross Country
$1,500 in teacher awards (to be awarded in May)

$3,600 to Football
$1,682 to Swimming

$2,000 to Cheer
$3,000 to Pony Express
$13,000 has been set aside for concession upgrades
$2,000 for Emergency Scholarship (to be paid in May)
$7,000 for school-wide picnicThe lesson I learned during my time volunteering with Parents’ Club is how much work it can be and how much dedication is required to achieve this kind of success. I also learned how absolutely rewarding this success can be! These past two years, I have been fortunate to be surrounded with an extraordinary group of parents who have unselfishly dedicated their time and efforts to the success of this club.
Maintaining the goals of Parents’ Club is critical to supporting the St. Mike’s community, and maintaining the goals are directly related to the number of volunteers and the hours they can contribute. The strength of Parents’ Club lies in its numbers. ALL PARENTS ARE MEMBERS. The more members that participate in Parent’s Club, the less work there is for everybody involved.
The time has come again to elect new officers to continue leading this effort. Parents’ Club needs to fill the offices of president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and committee chairpersons are needed to head up Hoofbeats and co-chair concession. Volunteers are needed to assist with the Fiesta Committee, the Raffle Committee, the Standard Dress Committee, the Concession Committee, and the Teacher’s Award Committee. I and the current treasurer, Sylvia Villareal, are committed to assisting and training new officers and committee volunteers so that the transition is less stressful and guided.
I would like to encourage you to take an active role in Parents’ Club. Tell a fellow parent our monthly meeting—this month it is on Tuesday, April 19, at 6 p.m. in the SMHS Library. Bring another parent with you to the meeting. The more parents who chip in, the easier it will be to continue providing the school and our children with the vital contributions that help keep the St. Mike’s wheels turning.
If you are interested or have any questions about Parents’ Club, the duties of the officers, etc., please contact me at 577-5922 and I will be happy to discuss any and all aspects of Parents’ Club with you.

Letter from Principal Govea
Mar 28, 2011
We live in a world that always seems to need proof. Global warming, which football team is the best, the stock market investment that will provide the highest return—even love and marriage seem to require proof. Our Heavenly Father sent that proof and for that reason we built our faith. Easter is a chance to remember that proof, and that we all have the chance to try again in this world.
My hope is that, as a community, we all use this Easter to renew our bodies, minds, and faiths so that we return to give our all in the final months of the school year.
This much I know to be true: when a school faces challenges—discipline, finances, the future forecast—it is very important to focus on positive factors. The following are the positive factors that I think about when I encounter the daily stresses of leading our school:
I take pride in working with such a professional collection of educators. The number of students being processed through the Admissions Office is growing, which means we are growing the student body for next year. I am humbled by the dedication and loyalty of our Alumni Association and Parents’ Club as they continue to work hard for the betterment of the St. Michael’s community. I appreciate the sacrifices parents and guardians make to send their children to our school. Our students as they open their minds and hearts to the teachings of De La Salle. For me, this is proof of the hope Christ gives us each and every day, most especially at Easter.
Forgiver of All Sins, we recall that Jesus suffered and died to atone for our sins. Help us be contrite for our sins and forgive those who have harmed us. We ask this in the name of our Eternal Redeemer. Amen.

Merry Christmas from St. Michael's High School
Dec 20, 2010
Dear St. Michael's Family,
As we approach Christmas, the Holy Season of the year, we take some time to count the many blessings that our Lord has bestowed upon us. This year we have special reason to be thankful for our many wonderful supporters--our parents, alumni, and friends who have been so generous to us and committed to advancing the mission of St. Michael's.
The mission of the Christian Brothers, with the help of a very stong lay faculty and staff, opens our doors to all who seek excellence in their lives because our purpose is to provide a superior education. We are well aware of the sacrifices you have made in order for your sons and daughters to attend St. Michael's, and we strive to meet as many of our students' needs as possible, both academic and spiritual. We also want to impress upon them the importance of our traditions. Our alumni will testify to the lasting influence St. Michael's had on their lives and to the many cherished memories that were created here.
On behalf of the SMHS administration and our Lasallian colleagues, we extend our sincere thanks to you and our many friends for your outstanding support this past year. May you and your loved ones receive many blessings from our Lord during this wonderful season and in the coming year.
Yours in Christ,
Sam Govea, PrincipalSt. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts, forever.

What does
Dec 13, 2010
UPDATE: We experienced trouble with the survey and will be re-posting it in the new year. Sorry for the inconvenience.
As part of an on-going effort to preserve our traditions while looking toward the future, we want to know your thoughts and feelings about what it means to be a Horseman, and how the school represents that identity graphically. Students created the following brief survey as part of a class project so that we can get as much feedback as possible about this issue from students, parents and alumni.

St. Mike's Launches Pledge of Respect
Nov 15, 2010 | 8 comments | Leave a comment
Today, St, Michael's High School launched the Pledge of Respect to encourage all students, teachers, staff, adminstrators, parents, alumni, and other community members to treat one another with respect and love, echoing two of the core principles of the Lasallian tradition: Respect for All Persons and Inclusive Community. Luis Valdez, a senior and the student body president, was the organizing force behind the pledge; he was assisted by many teachers as well as Lasallian Student Leaders. All St. Mike's trustees signed the pledge at the most recent meeting of the Board of Trustees.
Pledge of Respect:
I believe in the equality of all humankind and in the equal rights of every individual. I believe it is wrong to be prejudiced or cruel, physically or emotionally, to any person or group of people. I will not intimidate, be cruel, or act superior to others. I will honor and support the equal rights of everyone. I will look deep into myself to see that I uphold this promise in every way. I will work to educate others so that they will not be prejudiced or cruel. I will act to stop prejudice and cruelty every time I am aware that it is happening or is about to happen. I have the courage to take this stand because I am Lasallian. All members of the St. Mike's community, including parents and alumni, are welcome to sign the pledge all this week at lunchtime, 11:30 a.m. - 1:20 p.m. All signers receive a green rubber bracelet stamped with 'Love is Respect' and 'Respect is Equality.' For more information, please comment on this post.
Note: If you live out of state or cannot make it to school to sign the pledge but would like to add your name, please post a comment to the blog with your name, graduation year if applicable, and then copy and paste the phrase 'I understand the responsbility of this pledge and agree to carry it out to the best of my abilty.'

Annual Food Drive Taking Place Now
Oct 08, 2010
The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Board, in coordination with Food Depot, Generation Next and Warehouse 21, is sponsoring the second annual 21-day food drive for youth under 21 years of age. This food drive is unique because it is also a competition between Santa Fe’s high schools (public and private). The school with the highest average of food—determined by dividing the number of students by the total pounds of food—will receive an event at Warehouse 21.
Last year, the community raised 2,863 pounds of food. Although St. Mike’s brought in the most total food out of all the schools, we ultimately came in second place to SER Academy. This year, let’s take the blue prize! We are known for our athletics; let us also be known for out generosity and Lasallian spirit!
This year the Food Depot has found a donor who will donate 10 cents to the Food Depot’s capital campaign for every pound of food we collect, up to $5,000. The food drive is an important event: in New Mexico, among households with children, 74% are food-insecure and 26% are experiencing hunger. We can make a difference!
Collection bins will be located in the St. Mike’s lobby through October 21. Remember, heavier items help the school’s total weight and also tend to be more nutritional. Please refrain from brining in non-perishable items.
As a Lasallian school we emphasize five principles: faith in the presence of God, respect for all persons, quality education, inclusive community, and concern for the poor and social justice. By bringing in food, we are living out these golden principles.
Many thanks,
Caitlin Smith, Vice President of the MYAB, 12th grade

KAIROS Retreat Information and Sign-Up Form for Download
Oct 05, 2010
The following letter was sent to parents yesterday. To download and print the sign-up form, click here.
Dear Parents/Guardians of Juniors and Seniors,
In today’s world, with so many societal pressures, it is often difficult to keep God’s presence front and center in our lives. At St. Michael’s, we hope to offer a KAIROS retreat so that students may have the opportunity to strengthen their personal relationship with God. One of the unique characteristics of a KAIROS retreat is that it is mainly student-led. Sixteen students and seven faculty members, including myself, have had the opportunity to attend a KAIROS retreat at Mullen High School, a Lasallian school located in Denver, CO, and we all believe that the KAIROS retreat program will greatly benefit our students. We are working hard to bring this program to St. Michael’s High School starting this year, but in order to make this happen, we need at least 30 junior or senior boys and 30 girls (30 for each retreat) who are willing to take advantage of this amazing experience. Based on student-interest alone, there is the potential for four retreats total (two for boys and two for girls).
The Kairos retreat team is extending an invitation to all juniors and seniors to participate in St. Michael’s KAIROS retreat. The following is an excerpt from Mullen’s invitation letter from Mr. Joseph Schuhardt, the Pastoral Director at Mullen High School, which will further explain the KAIROS retreat:
KAIROS means “the Lord's time.” Your son/daughter is at a very special point in his/her life. This retreat will be a wonderful opportunity for your son/daughter to grow in self-awareness, as well as deepen her relationships with God, with you, his/her family, and with his/her fellow students. KAIROS is a wonderful and powerful program, and I greatly appreciate your cooperation and support in allowing your son/daughter to participate in KAIROS.
I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce you to the Kairos Program. Kairos is a retreat program that was started in the 1970’s by the Jesuits. Since its conception, the Kairos program has evolved and spread to countless schools throughout the world.
What makes Kairos such a popular and powerful experience? Kairos takes the participant and helps him/her examine the most fundamental values of adolescent relationships: his/her place in relation to his/her parents, his/her friends, himself/herself and God. Kairos will challenge your son/daughter to see God in all these and to put his/her faith into action. Above all, Kairos challenges your son/daughter to embrace his/her role as a “faith-filled leader.”
The actual cost of the retreat is $350/participant, but the KAIROS retreat team is working hard to defer that cost, so we are asking each participant to pay $225 for the 3 ½ day retreat. I am asking you to discuss this opportunity with your son/daughter and if the Lord leads you, then to indicate below your interest in helping to make the KAIROS experience a reality at St. Michael’s. Please return the bottom of this letter to the front office by Wednesday, October 6, 2010.
I will distribute registration forms for the first boys’ retreat by the end of this week and other registration forms closer to the retreat date. We don’t want cost to prohibit any student from attending, so please contact me so we can make some kind of arrangement. If you have any questions, call me at (505) 983-7353 ext. 142 or my cell at 660-3104. Thank you for considering this invitation.
Sincerely,Diahann Larson, Director of Lasallian Ministry and the Kairos Retreat team
