Head Football Coach Joey Fernandez is a 1988 alumnus of St. Michael’s High School. After graduating from St. Michael's he attended the University of New Mexico on a football scholarship. He graduated from UNM in 1993 with a BS in Physical Education. He began his football coaching career at St. Michael's in the fall of 1993 as an assistant coach. In 1997, he was named the Boys and Girls Track and Field coach and he also started his St. Michael's teaching career. He became head football coach in 2002. His teams have accumulated a total of 8 state championships in these sports. Fernandez became the all time winningest football coach in St. Michael's history on October 15th 2011 surpassing Salvador Perez and has accumulated 158 wins in 18 years as head coach.

Joey is the proud father to six children (All Horsemen), Joel (2011), Jordan (2014), Joliaunna (2015), Jocelyn (2017), Joey (2018) and Joelyn (2019) and grandfather to Kaylee.
