Janis Chitwood is a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas.  She received her Master’s Degree from the University of Texas. 

As a Texan, she was a frequent visitor to Santa Fe and the Ghost Ranch, Abiqui, where she took classes in fiber arts and silkscreen.  In 1992, she moved to Santa Fe and taught first, second, and fourth grades at Cristo Rey School as well as English classes in the Adult Basic Education program at Santa Fe Community College. In 2000 she moved to St. Michael’s where she has found her passion for teaching through working with 9th, 11th, and 12th grade English students.  

While at St. Michael’s, she has been grade level moderator, Kairos Retreat leader, Student Council Moderator, and a member of the Administrative Team;  she is a graduate of the Lasallian Leadership Institute.  In 2011, Ms. Chitwood was recognized as an outstanding teacher by the St. Michael’s Parents’ Club and later, in 2014, was honored by the Archdiocese of Santa Fe as a Teacher of the Year, for dedication to Catholic education. 

Outside of school, Ms. Chitwood is an active member of First Presbyterian Church.  She enjoys creative projects, cooking, reading, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
