Horsemen Highlights for week of Mar. 13-17
Staff Welcome:
A Horseman welcome to Mr. Richard Halford who started this week as our Director of Finance, a position created to steward our financial operations and planning. He brings a wealth of experience from his 30 years working in government public school finance.
Congratulations to St. Michael’s alumnus (class of 1969) and former Horseman educator, coach, and athletic director, Joe Butler on being inducted to the NMAA Hall of Fame. There was a great article this morning in the paper about him.
Senior Portraits - Next Wednesday, March 15th, a photographer will be on campus to take individual headshots of our seniors in tux/drape for the wall composite picture that deck the hallways of St. Mike’s.
Campus Ministry March Prayer Service - Next Thursday, March 16th, all the students of religion classes each class period will be gathering together throughout the day in the auditorium to listen to guest speaker/singer/songwriter, Karen Lafferty, for our monthly communal prayer/reflection. Karen is a native New Mexican from Alamogordo who set out for California in the 1970's to pursue her dreams in the music industry and was at the forefront of Contemporary Christian music. She is most notably recognized for her song "Seek Ye First" and will be sharing her ministry of music and the story of her journey with Christ.
Academics
Ineligibility: According to our “Student Parent Handbook” students who are currently on ineligibility from last semester’s grades have the possibility of becoming eligible with the third quarter grades. Br. James will send an official email to those students and parents once the grades are completely processed by the Registrar. He will also send an official email to students who, because of third quarter grades, remain ineligible.
2023-2024 Course Selection: Please encourage your student to turn in their course selection form if that has not happened yet. Forms are due up to Wed., March 15 and must have a parent/guardian signature. The “2023-2024 Course Catalogue” is available on the school website.
Registration information for the 2023-2024 year will follow, but here are the key dates (also posted on the website “admissions/timeline” page:
- Returning Student Registration Deadline April 16, 2023.
- New Student Registration Deadline April 30, 2023.
- Late Registration Contracts Assigned April 17, 2023 (Returning Students Only)
- Late Registration Contracts Assigned May 1, 2023 (New Students Only)
- Financial Aid Contracts Created and Completed by April 30, 2023.
- Financial Aid Awards Mailed Home May 31, 2023.
PSAT Testing: We had a successful morning this past Wednesday of PSAT testing for all the Sophomores. Thank you to Ms. Angel for setting it up and for the future planning of the next round of tests for grade 9 (Wed., Apr. 19) and grade 8 (Thurs., Apr. 20). More information is forthcoming about these two test dates. On testing days, students will be expected to be in regular school dress and to attend their regular classes after the testing and lunch ends.
Athletic Highlights:
Girls Basketball: Congratulations to the girls basketball team and head coach Sonya Ruiz on a successful season. The girls had a winning record for the first time in over 5-years and reached the state quarterfinals in Rio Rancho.
Boys Basketball: The boys basketball team will play in the state semifinals on Friday, March 10th at the PIT on the University of New Mexico campus. The game will tip-off at 9:45 AM. If they win, the finals are
Pony Express: Congratulations to the Pony Express. They had an outstanding performance on Thursday afternoon at The PIT (UNM) during the State basketball tournament.
More Tournament Time: The Horsemen baseball and softball tournaments will take place next week on March 16th - 18th. We will welcome 14 visiting teams to our campus.
Principal Search Committee News: We will begin a candidate interview process. Different groups will be conducting interviews. Each group has pre-prepared questions (in part, composed from the survey input from you and others we received in December) and selected interviewers. Those not interviewing will be able to observe some of the interviews online (those observing will not be allowed to ask any questions, but will be given a survey question at the end for their input). More information and zoom links will be forthcoming but here are the dates for your planning:
Sun., March 12: Executive Search Team Interview (no online option for anyone)
Tues., March 14: Candidate visit to school
During school day: Student Interview: format involvement for students only
3:00 PM: Faculty/Staff Interview: format involvement for faculty/staff only
6:00 PM: Three back to back interviews (Parent, then Alumni, then Foundation/Board of Trustees) of about 30 minutes each that will have links set up for online observing. After each interview a survey input question for viewers will be available.

Are you ready to plan your Class Reunion? Reunions are planned by members of the Class, so I am searching for committee members from each Class to help you plan your reunions, some of which have dates in the Fall: 10th (2013) on Nov. 11, 20th (2003) on Aug. 26, 30th (1993), 40th (1983) on Oct. 21, and 50th (1973).
