“The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.-Frederick Buechner,
What an incredible week it has been for rising seniors Madeline Imus and Mariella Rigales who joined Ms. Larson on a service immersion trip in San Diego to learn more about immigration issues that affect so many people’s lives. This experiential service learning introduced us to the connectedness of our bigger Lasallian family by providing an opportunity to meet other students from Lasallian Catholic schools in our San Francisco New Orleans District and the Northern Mexico District. Learning about and seeing the challenges facing people seeking refuge opened our minds and hearts to the needs of those around us. The ongoing theme of the week was to create change against injustice acting as leaven of justice. Just as it only takes a little yeast to make bread rise, we too are called to do little things that can make a huge difference and add to the bigger fight against injustices in our world.
St. Mike’s Senior Madeline Imus reflects, “It’s been amazing. The people I’ve met and the stories I’ve heard have completely altered what I knew before. I’ve learned so much about immigration, and I’ve gained a new appreciation for the work that migrants do to gain citizenship in the US.”
And Senior Mariella Rigales adds, “My personal experience has been great, the people I’ve met are beautiful. I definitely know more about the reality of immigration and what immigrants’ journeys can consist of. I wish the best for everyone I met in the shelters and they brought me a lot of happiness in that one day which was nice.”
A quote that will continue to inspire us all was by one of our presenters, Jorge Gutierrez, “If you don’t know what to do, smile.”
