Horsemen Highlights for week of October 23 - 27, 2023
Dear Parents,
As we begin the second nine-week period of the first semester, we are seeing an uptick in student absences mainly due to illness. It is important to keep your child home if they have a fever and/or are displaying COVID or flu like symptoms. Students may keep up with missed work through Google Classroom. It is important that all missed assignments are completed.
The first nine weeks progress reports were available in OnBoard on October 18. I hope you have had an opportunity to review grades with your child. Please contact the teacher directly if you have any questions or concerns. I do have a concern with the number of students with a D or an F; missing assignments are the main reason for these low grades. Please consistently monitor your child’s progress in OnBoard. All grades should be up to date every Monday.
If your child is struggling academically, I encourage them to take advantage of individual teacher help either before school, at lunch, or after school. Students can also take advantage of peer tutoring as well as work with our college and career counselor on an academic support plan. If your child is experiencing high anxiety or stress, I encourage them to see our mental and behavioral health counselor for support. We have many resources to support your child and will do everything we can to help them be successful.
Thank you for your continued support of our students, staff, and our academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs. Go Horsemen!
Yours in Christ,
Martin C. Sandoval, Principal
Academics:
Meeting Schedule Tuesday 10/24/2023 - BELL SCHEDULE
Grades Update- As a reminder, this year we are on a continuous grading system. That means that grades do not “start over” after the first nine-weeks but will continue until the end of the Semester 1 grading period on December 15. The final grade for each class, as well as honor roll and athletic/activity eligibility, is determined at the end of the semester.
Should you have questions about your student’s midterm progress report in any class, please be sure to contact the teacher directly.
Senior parents- Seniors received dual credit information in their Google Classroom today. Click HERE for more information on the SMHS dual credit eligibility for the spring semester.
Message from the Deans:
Midterm progress reports are posted in On Board accounts. Because we are on a continuous grading system this year, grades will change once teachers put in new assignments. Please continue to check your student's current grades in OnBoard frequently. Honor roll and ineligibility are not determined until the end of the semester when the final grades for classes are published.
We want to give our Juniors (Class of 2025) a big round of applause for their hard work on the PSAT/NMSQT exam on Tuesday. They were all on time, stayed focused and completed their exams. Thank you, parents, for supporting your student during this time and assisting us in ensuring that they arrive on time and put their best foot forward.
Our meeting schedule continues on Tuesday, October 24. Release time is 2:55. Please make sure your students are picked up in a timely manner as teachers will be in meetings in the afternoon. The library and classrooms will be closed after school.
Please help us remind your students that they are expected to be prepared for class on a daily basis. This means attending class with appropriate materials, charged chromebooks, and cell phones in their backpacks.
Students are encouraged to use their lockers on a regular basis to store their belongings. All lockers (hallway and locker rooms) should be locked at all times to avoid items from being misplaced.
Covid and flu season are upon us. Please adhere to the best practices administered by the CDC and the NMDOH. You can find more information regarding Covid by clicking HERE. For access to the Covid 19 Tool Kit click HERE. Refer to pages 11-12 for quick information on what to do with an exposure and a test result.
Call for San Miguel Chapel Docents:
San Miguel Chapel, The Oldest Church in the US, is always looking for new docents to join our team of volunteers. A docent is a teacher or an educator - a nice way to help visitors.
This is a very informal community-oriented opportunity to share two hours per week of your time to meet world travelers and locals who want to know about Santa Fe's intriguing beginnings and the origins of both Saint Michael's and the Christian Brothers School.
Most docents find that they look forward to getting out of the house every week, getting off of the tv or phone screen, and meeting happy folks. For two hours, the world is a beautiful place full of thoughtful people.
San Miguel Chapel puts into practice the LaSallian core principles of creating an inclusive, heart-based community. Please contact Laurianne Fiorentino, Director, and stop by the chapel during visiting hours to get a sense of this chance to be part of our hometown heritage.
