A proud native of Clayton, New Mexico, Dakota Montoya brings energy, leadership, and heart to St. Michael’s athletics. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education with minors in Coaching and Athletic Training from Eastern New Mexico University and later earned a Certificate of Alternative Teaching in Elementary Education from New Mexico Highlands University. Dakota teaches Sports PE and Boys Basketball while leading the boys’ basketball program. His earliest inspiration came from his grandmother, who was also an educator and often worked with him on school activities, instilling in him a love for learning and mentorship. A former college football player at Eastern New Mexico University, he now channels that same competitive drive into coaching and mentoring student-athletes. At home, he and his wife, Heather, enjoy raising their four children, Cruz, Blake, Demi, and Dace. Known for his dedication to his players and students, Dakota hopes they remember most that he cared deeply for them and worked tirelessly to prepare them for life. He treasures the pride and dedication that radiates throughout the St. Michael’s community, which inspires him daily.
