Horsemen Highlights for week of August 28- September 1, 2023
To our St. Michael's Community,
It has been a pleasure welcoming our amazing student body back to campus for the new school year. It has been a great first week with students already actively engaged in their learning and actively involved in our school whether through athletics or other extracurricular activities. Through Horsemen Highlights we will share all the great happenings here at our school. We are very excited for the new school year and all that it will bring to make it a great one. St. Michale's is a special place, and it is truly a blessing to be part of the Horsemen family.
Yours in Christ,
Martin C. Sandoval, Principal
Academics:
We would like to welcome our new art teacher, Jocelyn Staton to the St. Michael's family. She is an amazing artist who is passionate about teaching. She is excited to be at St. Michael's and share her expertise with our students. She will be a great addition to our faculty.
We are excited that many of our juniors and seniors are participating in dual credit through UNM-Taos and the Santa Fe Community College. We currently have 43% of our juniors and seniors enrolled in one or more dual credit courses this semester. If there are questions regarding the dual credit program, please email Ms. Leyba at [email protected].
St. Michael's High School is now offering a Senior Capstone Experience zero hour. The Senior Capstone Experience provides SMHS seniors an opportunity at authentic learning using real world experiences. Through the participation of a mentorship in a professional partnership within the Santa Fe Community, students will receive valuable real-world experience through observation of skills in the industry and instruction from a mentor. Students will also work on an independent research project that will be presented and defended at the end of the year. Depending on the mentorship placement, students may be required to meet specific requirements. The goal of the mentorship program is to facilitate authentic, individualized learning outside of the school environment. It is also designed to create a meaningful relationship between the student and the adult professional who is neither a teacher nor parent/guardian. If you or your Senior student is interested, please contact Ms. Leyba. Her email is [email protected]. More information can be found on the program site SHMS SENIOR CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE "
On Thursday, August 31st beginning at 5:30 p.m., we will have our annual Mini Schedule Parent Night. This special evening gives you, the parents and guardians, the opportunity to walk in your students' footsteps and follow their schedule. You will get to meet your student's teachers and spend time with them to find out more about each class and answer general questions. We hope you can join us Thursday night.
