Horsemen Highlights for week of Jan. 23-27
Staffing: Thank you to Mr. Armijo for his work as Registrar this past semester. He will be joined by Ms. Ann Erickson this coming semester as they share the responsibilities. Please continue to make any Registrar-related contact through Mr. Armijo.
Website Updates:
Bell Schedule and Lunch: The revised bell schedule will be available on the Student Parent Resource page of the website by next week. It aligns the lunch periods of all types of days so that numbers of students at the respective Junior and Senior high lunch periods is balanced.
Inclement Weather:
The announcement of our Snow Day cancellation of school last week happened about 45 minutes after our posted time for making such announcements. The shift to colder temperatures and increasingly icier road conditions during that 45 minutes, as well as finding out our student parking lot was very icy beneath the snow, prompted the late call. Only 7 students showed up, having not seen the message, but Br. James was at the front entrance, so they didn’t get stranded by the parent and grandparent drivers dropping them off. If anyone who drives your students to school is not on our REMIND cell phone alert system, feel free to send their cell phone number to Ms. Chavez ([email protected]).
Dual Credit Courses
The Dual Credit students have successfully submitted their NM registrations. We are in the midst of evaluating the dual credit courses to see where they should and should not be lodged within our curriculum next year. We are also exploring dual credit and other college level options with UNM and other universities. The UNM dual credit liaison visited this past week and besides telling us we are UNM’s first private school participating in dual credit, she was impressed with academic level and caliber of the courses we offer all students in our regular curriculum.
Ineligibility and Academic Probation
Official school communication letters have been emailed to parents of students on extracurricular ineligibility because of first semester grades. Similar “Academic Probation” letters are in the process of coming out soon. They are backdated to earlier this month to the time the ineligibility took effect and was already communicated through the previously existing system of communicating ineligibility through the coaches.
Student Cheering Section
During basketball games, the student cheering section has had a couple of traditions that those sitting near it need to know: They stand a lot (which blocks the view of people who might be sitting behind them) and they expect only St. Michael’s students to be seated in their section (a St. Michael’s staff person will be at hand at games now to help students with identifying and moving non-St. Mike’s students). Some of the students regularly in the cheering section are working on designating the space more clearly so other fans know. Please respect these traditions and encourage your students at the game to join the cheering section especially as we enter District playoff competitions. Thank you to Mr. Grine and the students who have contributed to discussions and plans moving forward.
Seniors
Deadline for the seniors to order caps and gowns from Josten's is February 1, 2023. Other items for seniors and upcoming seniors are available for purchase by clicking on Josten's School Store for St. Michael's Horsemen.
Kairos Retreat
Congratulations to the Junior girls who attended the Kairos retreat; they rose to the challenge of exploring their relationships with God, others, and self. Thank you to Ms Larson and her in school staff, along with the priests who helped out, who guided our retreatants. The boys Kairos is in the scheduling and planning stages.
Prayer Resource
A “Bible Diary” of Lasallian reflections on each day’s Gospel for 2023 is available for free online HERE. We thank Br. Brickston of India for gathering reflections from Brothers all over the world, including our own Br. James (the December reflections).
